See how archives of Catholic religious offer a window into lives of nuns/sisters, their families and communities, and get tips on finding and accessing records.
About 350,000 women have been Catholic nuns and sisters in hundreds of religious orders in the United States. When they took vows, many became historically invisible. Archives and archival collections kept by their religious order may fill in those missing genealogical details and give insight into their life.
Sunny Jane Morton co-authored How to Find Your Family History in U.S. Church Records, instructs at GRIP Genealogy Institute (2024-2025), and won the Cushwa Center (Catholic) Research Award in 2024.
