SU03 Guiding Principles for the Genealogical Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Sunday, 25 May 2025, 4:00 p.m., Combs Chandler

This panel will present the guiding principles to engage when using artificial intelligence congruent with existing genealogical standards and ethical practices.  The purpose of this presentation is to encourage “responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI)” in genealogy.

A team representing key organizations met this year over a period of six months to discuss and draft a document that “outlines principles for the genealogical community to follow when using AI to research, write, share, or provide records about individuals, family trees, and histories.” This team continues to meet to refine and incorporate advances in this area. Topics to be discussed include accuracy, sources, content, images, privacy, transparency, and compliance.

Lynn Broderick, the Single Leaf, has been a member of many societies and associations. She champions genealogical standards, ethics and welcomes all into the community.

Steve Little, driven by a deep love for language and technology, has been a trailblazer in documenting and advancing the field of AI-assisted genealogy from its onset.

Mark Thompson is a professional genealogist and educator specializing in genetic genealogy and researching personal family archives. Mark held leadership roles in information technology for both startup companies and large corporations.
