SA42 Finding Community through a USCT Widow’s Pension

Saturday, 24 May 2025, 3:30 p.m., Carroll Ford room

This session discusses the pension process with a case study of a “gold mine” file that helped connect the dots in an African American Community.

We’ll discuss the anatomy of a pension, and problems and inconsistencies that make for a more interesting file.  The many resources available for researchers will be presented  with examples from Kentucky, Ohio/Michigan, and Arkansas, followed by a longer case study.

Jessica Trotter is a researcher, blogger and archivist working in public libraries. Her research areas include the Midwest, African American, British Isles and Canadian research.
