“Charley Keep My Gun Clean”: Documenting Love and Loss During the Civil War – Amy Larner Giroux

The U.S. Civil War has been documented in many ways—from contemporary records to modern cinematic productions. While unit and regimental histories can tell a broad story of where their men were during the war, we strive to see the stories more intimately from the point of view of a common soldier. Our kin and their individual scenes within the conflict may not be documented in detail, but the letters, diaries, photographs, and other documents from those who were in similar circumstances can help fill in context for our own ancestral stories. Attendees will be introduced to an array of source materials and a set of search methods that can help locate anecdotal information to contextualize and enhance family stories of the war period.

This presentation, along with the Board for Certification of Genealogists Skillbuilding lecture “Faded Echoes of the Civil War: Correlating Evidence of Identity and Kinship”(session NGS2104-BCG-02) will expand the toolkits of attendees working on research during the U.S. Civil Wartime period.

BIO: Amy Larner Giroux, PhD, CG, CGL, is an award-winning author with articles published in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society Record, The Genealogist (American Society of Genealogists), and Florida Studies. Her research interests include New York, New England, Florida, military cemeteries, burial iconography, and ethnic studies.
