NGS 2021 On-Demand! Speaker Spotlight – Janine Cloud
Why Big Y? The Benefits of Advanced Y-DNA Testing – Janine Cloud
SESSION: NGS2104-SP-18 TRACK: DNA
In this session, Janine will examine what the Big Y is, how it’s useful, and why genealogists should consider investing in advanced Y-DNA testing, specifically FamilyTreeDNA’s Big Y-700.
While aimed at an intermediate audience, this session will cover some basics of Y-DNA testing, including useful terms to help you understand the results of the test. It will also look at the impact that the Big Y has had on surname research and the Y haplotree, which is essentially the genetic pedigree of humankind’s paternal lineage.
If you’ve heard of the Big Y and are not sure whether it is worth the expense, be sure to tune in. If you’ve not heard of the Big Y and are looking for a way to take your paternal line beyond the five or six generations to which autosomal DNA is limited, be sure to tune in.
Janine will also examine what makes a sequenced test different from other types of DNA testing. Case studies will demonstrate the test’s effectiveness and show the importance of collaboration with others of the genetic lines in order to bring those lines into recent timeframes as well as how SNPs revealed in Big Y can identify family lines more accurately than surnames can.
