Persons with Mississippi ancestry will benefit from this overview of researching in the Magnolia State. Those attending will receive a link to additional resources. A brief overview of the state’s earliest history and settlement will examine resources for this period. Government-created records provide useful genealogical information. A variety of records and the repositories holding them will be discussed. Understanding laws in place in our ancestors’ time informs our genealogical narrative.

Other records such as church records, business records, organization records, and manuscripts give additional information. Maps help us understand the place our ancestors lived. Sources for locating historic Mississippi maps will be included. Local histories and social histories provide details pertinent to our ancestors’ experiences. A mini tour of Mississippi repositories concludes the talk.
