This session will introduce you to a variety of records that can prove dates, places, and relationships in the era before vitals records were kept consistently. NSDAR requires this information even when vital records, as we know them, did not exist or have been lost. We will discuss town, church, and Bible records, and where you might find them. Also, we will cover tombstones, newspapers, scholarly journals, deeds, wills, probates, and other court records, how to find them, and how best to understand what they do and do not prove. The special requirements for DAR applications and supplementals will be discussed. Several examples will demonstrate how to use these records successfully, either alone or in conjunction with additional records (an analysis in DAR-speak) to prove dates, places, and generational links. Anyone involved in preparing applications and supplementals for DAR will benefit from this session. However, others who are interested in learning more about records from this early period will benefit from this session as well.
