LaBrenda Garrett-Nelson, JD, LLM, CG, CGL, is a professional genealogist. She has been active in the Board for Certification of Genealogists (BCG) and lectures frequently on standards and the proper documentation of genealogical work and proof arguments. Her lecture in the BCG Skillbuilding track will discuss the importance of standards in achieving quality research results. Her methodology talk will cover nineteen standards used in assembling one’s research as demonstrated in case studies and kinship determination projects.
Garrett-Nelson was a tax lawyer for 35 years before retiring from a partner-level position at Ernst & Young in 2013. She is an author, lecturer, teacher, Certified Genealogist®, and Certified Genealogical LecturerSM. She is the author of Research in Alabama, part of the NGS Research in the States series of guidebooks. In 2021, she was elected as the 170th Fellow of the American Society of Genealogists, the independent honorary society of the leading published scholars in the field of American genealogy. Founded in 1940, the ASG is limited to fifty life-time members designated as Fellows.
