Session Number: S311 Title: Within the Union Lines: Correlating Evidence to Locate Former Plantations |
|
Giroux’s lecture is part of the BCG Skillbuilding track and describes the research methods involved in identifying the former plantations of a group of enslaved North Carolinians during the US Civil War. Simon Pew escaped from his plantation and crossed the Union lines, working for the Quartermaster’s Department for six months before returning to his plantation and leading his extended family and others to freedom. This case study follows Simon’s service and correlates evidence from pensions, estate records, and more to locate the Pitt County plantations. |
