Debra A. Hoffman is a professional genealogist, author, and lecturer, who specializes in Maryland and German research. She has a certificate in Family History from Brigham Young University and a Professional Learning Certificate in Genealogical Studies (PLCGS)-German Records from the National Institute of Genealogical Studies. She co-authored NGS’ Research in the States Series: Maryland, released in 2021. She is the principal of Hoffman Genealogical Services.

Germans made an indelible mark on Virginia’s history, particularly the Shenandoah Valley. This presentation will cover historical background on the settlements of Germans in Virginia and will cover the sources that will provide information on them.  Pertinent methodology will be discussed and illustrated with appropriate case studies. Coverage of important societies and repositories with relevant collections will be highlighted.
