Society Showcase – Association of African Ancestored Researchers – St. Louis (AAAR-StL)
The Association of African Ancestored Researchers – St. Louis is a group of genealogy researchers who specialize in hands-on African American research. It is approximately two years old and was founded by Sarah Cato and Mildred Rias. It was founded out of a desire to have a group which did hands-on genealogy research. The purpose was to teach other genealogists new techniques to research and find their families.
The format of the group differs from others by teaching the historical and research skills necessary and then allowing the time within meetings for the application of the new techniques. For example, we have studied how historical maps can be used to locate where ancestors lived or worked. We also stress the importance of studying the friends, associates and neighbors of those we research to determine facts about their lives.
We plan and execute one major program a year. This year we sponsored the Slave Dwelling Project. Founded by Mr. Joseph McGill of Charleston, SC, his goal is to sleep in every dwelling where enslaved people lived and/or worked. While in St Louis he gave presentations, led discussions, and did a sleepover at the historic Campbell House.
We are a genealogy group that is open to all, and we have a diverse membership. We operate under the principle that all can learn from any. If one has the skill set needed to do African American research, s/he can do research on any ethnic group. We can be contacted via email at [email protected] and the AAARStL website.
