SA14 Virginia Resources for Research on Early Kentuckians
Saturday, 24 May 2025, 9:45 a.m., Combs Chandler room
Not all records on early Kentuckians are in Kentucky. Many pre-statehood records remain in Virginia; many of these are available online.
Although first settled in 1773, it was three years before a Kentucky-based county was established. Prior to that, Virginia counties were the source of local business from recording deeds to settling court suits, to establishing roads, collecting taxes, caring for the poor and disabled and organizing the militia. During and until Kentucky statehood, Virginia state records include petitions and requests from local citizens, private legislative acts, payments for services, appointments of local officials, establishment of government services, among other actions.
