SU23 Using Tax Records to Address Genealogical Issues

Sunday, 25 May 2025, 11:00 a.m., Grand Ballroom A/B

This session surveys evidence that can be gleaned from pre-20th century tax records to address a myriad of genealogical questions.

We’ll look at the types of taxes prescribed by law. Then we’ll see some examples of tax records that provide direct or indirect evidence of a subject’s geographic location, age, date of death, and /or economic circumstances.

LaBrenda Garrett-Nelson, JD, LLM, CG, CGL, FASG, is a trustee of BCG and Fellow of the American Society of Genealogists. Her lectures focus on both Methodology and African American Genealogy.
