SA233 Enslavement, A President’s Ancestors & the Underground Railroad to Canada

Saturday, 24 May 2025, 11:15 a.m., French room

My 50 year journey from school kid to documenting enslaved ancestors who escaped from the ancestors of Presidents.

Mr. Holman’s journey was chronicled on the front page of the Washington Post as the story “Ancestry, Slavery and a Political Dynasty.” In this session, besides his research, he will discuss locating and contacting descendants of enslavers to gain additional documentation and records, meeting the descendants of lost family members and enslavers, and visiting the sites where the enslavers and enslaved people lived.

Charles F. Holman, III, is an attorney and SAR member. Through the use of DNA and documents he made remarkable discoveries about enslaved ancestors and their enslavers.
