SU02 Strategies and Resources for Conducting Enslaved Ancestral Research

Sunday, 25 May 2025, 8:00 a.m., French room

Uncovering the lives of enslaved ancestors demands meticulous research. Knowledge of diverse records and proven methodologies will empower researchers to illuminate these ancestors’ stories.

This lecture discusses two approaches for research, focusing on the enslaver in antebellum records, and focusing on the enslaved ancestor in reconstruction-era records. Go-to records for conducting slave ancestral research will be presented, and some online resources discussed.

Renate Yarborough Sanders is an experienced genealogist and educator, who specializes in teaching methodology and sharing resources for researching enslaved and free ancestors of color.
